4th song ever written by UT, and 1st demo they made in a proper studio.
Jason : "After a really bad day at work, and a very late finish (about
11 o'clock), I came straight to Nigel's house and, as I so often do, moaned
about my lack of talent and ability, and questioned what the hell I was doing.
It must have just been something about the time of night and the feeling of
desperation, of being useless, but a single riff I was playing abruptly became 'Solved'.
"
Nigel : "While Andy was away in Moscow again, me and Jase recorded a
bunch of stuff, often working from song fragments that Andy had left behind, and
for others finishing instrumental versions of songs to present Andy with ('Solved'
and 'Finest Little Space' were among these tracks). Andy returned again
for a break in April '93, for Easter. We again finished these songs. "
Jason: "'Solved' and 'Finest Little Space' were
recorded with the Andy Lovegrove at Chris and Bryce's studio which seemed to be
made entirely of wood. 'Solved' was the first down, I was still
working, so it was time off, and a bit like a holiday. It was all about do your
part, and then rush upstairs to play FIFA soccer and wait for the pizza to
arrive. However, whilst recording I sweated buckets to get the parts right
having not played in a band properly for at least a year, and I mean by that
gigging. I was the designated guitarist as the others were shit at this point.
Still, it was all right. "
Nigel: "While I enjoyed the experience of working with Lovegrove, as I
shall now call him, I think there was an element of feeling somewhat excluded
from the recording process which made me, as a control freak, uncomfortable at
times. There's no denying Lovegrove's talent for producing, but he did seem to
want to maintain a bit of engineer's mystery, as if good recordings are divined
from thin air through runic chanting."
Andy: "My first proper recording experience was kind of exciting. I
still love the smell of control rooms. Wood, hot machinery and spliff...
fabulous. I was also very keen on Andy Lovegrove's boots. I got me a pair of
those boots, which I'm still wearing seven years on. Lovegrove is a bit of a
soul-boy, though, and I don't think our acoustic melancholia really lent itself
to the breathy, multi-layered backing vocals he insisted on for the chorus of Solved.
"
Nigel:"Actually the third demo we did of this song, the first two
being on bedroom 8-track. This was the first demo we did at Courtyard Studios.
It's slower than the album version, and more produced - reverby tambourines,
breathy backing vocals, the whole schmatter - and although the 'Almost Here'
version certainly has an energy that this doesn't, it's not without it's charm.
Soul boy and now Away Team member Andy Lovegrove was in the producer's chair. "
